I am a fan of this series and of Elizabeth George, and I am giving this book three stars as in "a good book." I did not strongly like or dislike it.Pros: Barbara Havers continues to entertain and her relationship with her neighbors continues to develop. Winston Nkata is not a major character in this book, but you gotta love him and he's got one especially shining moment in the incident room. The novel alternates between a clinical case study of three boys involved in an older murder case and the current murder case being investigated by Scotland Yard, which is impressive in its complexity. It really picks up in the last third of the book as the two plot lines start to connect. The characters of Rob and Merry are likable and complex, and I found the last chapter of the book especially satisfying because of their likability. I found Jossie to be an intriguing character, if naive.
Cons: The first part of the book dragged, almost for the first third of the book. Initially the subplot of the little boy's murder detracted from the main plot line. I missed the interplay between Barbara and Lynley, who only had one real scene together where they hashed out their different takes on the case. The newest addition to the team, Isabelle Ardery, was very unlikable to me. She did not seem to have a personality. Her alcoholism/denial seems realistic and I am all for flawed characters and strong women, but there was nothing to make her sympathetic. And because I disliked her, I disliked Lynley's loyalty to her in the face of her rush to judgement and power plays, especially when that loyalty put him at odds with Barbara Havers. The attraction between Lynley and Ardery did not ring true for me; he is still grieving and nothing in the past 16 books would support him jumping into a relationship (even just a physical one) so soon after Helen's death. (And I say this as one of the few fans of the series who tended to be annoyed by Helen.) I get that grief would change a person, and I don't expect Lynley to always have good judgement on or off the job; I just found this pairing to be forced. Worse, it looks like she'll be back for at least one more book in large part thanks to him.

First Elizabeth George book I've ever disliked. She changed the character of Lynley's personality. The new chief supervisor is a horrible person in the way she treats other people and would not be the kind of person Lynley should be attracted to. I've stopped reading her after this one. Jumped the shark with this series
This book is almost 700 pages and every one is worth reading. It is the story of a two-year old child abducted, beaten, and murdered by three 10-year old boys – all of whom were living in tragic, threatening home situations themselves. As this story unfolds throughout, another story is developing about a lonely man living in the English countryside who becomes one of the suspects in a murder of a young woman. Chief Inspector Lynley returns to work after the tragic death of his wife and unborn child and is asked to help a woman who has been brought in as his replacement and who lets her arrogant, selfish methods practically destroy the investigating team. It is a very good mystery read.
After moving on to other mystery/police procedural writers after Elizabeth George killed Lady Helen (Thomas Lynley's wife) and their unborn child, I've decided to give her another go. So far, I'm not very impressed. Her writing style is excellent as always but her focus seems to have gone astray. The introduction of Acting Detective Superintendent Isabelle Ardery (an alcoholic power freak who has no idea how to lead a team & command appropriate respect) is quite unbelievable. She wants women to be respected equally but doesn't really like other women. She is frantic, seemingly unorganized & lives in complete denial of her alcoholism. She is antagonistic towards her team members. How she got to this position at Scotland Yard is completely baffling. Her relationship with Lynley is extremely questionable and one has to wonder why the author is taking this beloved character (Lynley) so far out of character. Most notable is the author's use of the true story of the death & brutal murder of two-year old James Bulger. I found it reprehensible. Perhaps she will move towards the writing style that made her so popular in her earlier novels. She has a unique talent & depth that is nearly equal to John Steinbeck. But I would not pay much to find out.
